A few weeks ago, I released my first-round mock draft, in which the Giants will get Clemson stud linebacker Isaiah Simmons. The Giants will still do this, I believe more firmly because just yesterday they released veteran linebackers Alec Ogletree and Kareem Martin, so they need this position filled. Prior to the release of their two linebackers the New York Football Giants had 75 million in cap space, after the release they save an extra 13 million dollars bringing themselves up to 88 million in cap! There are two big names on the free agent market, Yannick Ngakoue (Jacksonville) and Jadeveon Clowney (Seattle).
When the Giants won there two Superbowl’s in 2008 and 2012 they mainly won because of the pass rush led by Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck, and Osi Umenyiora. They attacked Rodgers in both NFC Championship games in Lambeau and defeated Tom Brady twice. It’s time the Giants go back to their roots and sign two dominate proven pass rushers. Clowney (21 solo tackles, 3 sacks, 3 pass defends, 1int, and 1 td) may not have had a statistical year but if you look through all of his games in Seattle, he was making a difference on every play forcing offensive lines to pay attention to him and allowing other player on the Seahawks to make a play. Ngakoue (36 solo tackles, 8 sacks, 6 pass defends, 1 int, and 1 td) had a better statistical season, and similar to Clowney made an impact on every play that he was on the field. These are two proven defensive ends that can dominate on their respective sides and forces offenses to create schemes to block or create trick plays to try to move the ball downfield.
New York is sitting in a position with a lot of cap space that they have to go out and get two of the best defensive ends in the business. Draft a young linebacker who can be the leader for years to come, and allow a young run stopping animal in Dexter Laurence to continue to dominate in the middle. This new front seven will allow for the further development of last year’s first rounder Dre Baker, who was beginning to play well towards the end of the year after struggling in the beginning. All of a sudden, a defense that was “middling” at best last year, looks far more formidable. Bring in a head coach from the Belichick branch. Add in a weak NFC East and the Giants can win out the division, and who knows maybe win a Superbowl???? *They did it with a 9-7 record TWICE. TWO TIMES!*
