With the conclusion of the NFL combine and Free Agency kicking off into a total frenzy its time to take a look at where teams rank coming into the regular season. This is subject to change as more free agents will be signed and when the NFL Draft begins on April 28th.
- Lost Angeles Rams
The Rams won the Super Bowl, and you have to respect that. So no change here; the Rams stay at the number one spot. Resigning Joe Noteboom and Brian Allen were smart moves to keep consistency on the offensive line after the Andrew Whitworth retirement and Austin Corbett leaving in Free Agency.
2. Cincinnati Bengals
Bengals made some solid signings to help out the offensive line, including Alex Cappa and Ted Karras. Although this is a loaded offense, and they once again could make it to the Super Bowl, they stay here at number 2.
3. Kansas City Chiefs
No change here for the Chiefs. They franchise tagged Orlando Brown, restructured Frank Clarks deal, and signed Justin Reid to a three-year contract. Kansas City is trying to bring in the support for their defense and is off to a great start.
4. Buffalo Bills
The Bills resigned some key players (center Mitch Morse and wideout Isaiah McKenzie) and then went out and signed offensive guard Rodger Saffold. Buffalo decided to go out and sign Von Miller to a massive 6y-$120 million deal, which immediately boosts their defensive front. And signing OJ Howard was brilliant; he can be an effective pass catcher for Josh Allen. The Bills are a great team, and they could be that much better with a solid draft. No change here for Buffalo.
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The most significant jump in this power-rankings is because Tom Brady is back for the team. With Brady leading them, Mike Evans, and Chris Godwin locked down; this is still a great offense. The Bucs were also able to resign Carlton Davis, a pivotal piece to their secondary. With a draft that they can focus on defense, this Bucs team again finds themselves in a position to win a championship.
6. Los Angeles Chargers
A trade for Khalil Mack, and they sign J.C Jackson in free agency. Finally, the Chargers’ defense is catching up to their offense in star power, and it’s the right move with Patrick Mahomes, Derek Carr, and now Russell Wilson in the division; they need all the help they can get. I’ve been saying for years, don’t sleep on the Chargers, and now it’s finally all coming together.
7. Green Bay Packers
Green Bay has key position groups lock mainly their quarterback situation, so they are still a team to beat. Davante Adams will not play the season on a franchise tag. This is something to monitor, and if the Packers cannot sign Adams, this will affect their offense.
8. Tennessee Titans
Resigning Harold Landry is enormous for their defense, and the main reason they are still up in the Top 10 is because of how well Mike Vrabel led this team last year despite all the injuries. The team fully supports him, and they are looking to win another AFC South division title.
9. San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers did lose offensive guard Laken Tomlinson to the Jets, which is a tough loss seeing how consistent he has been the last few years. But last year, this team found ways to win and make it to the NFC Championship game. Kyle Shanahan knows how to scheme for offensive success, and he will find ways again with Deebo Samuel.
10. Dallas Cowboys
Cowboys are a weird team for me. They traded away Amari Cooper for next to nothing and resigned Michael Gallup to a 5-year deal. But there was a lot of inconsistent offensive play at the end of their season. This is still a loaded offense, and in a weak division, they will win the East and be a team in the playoffs.
11. New England Patriots
Losing JC Jackson in free agency is a significant loss. Losing their offensive coordinator Josh McDaniel’s for the head coaching gig in Las Vegas is a speed bump in the development of Mac Jones. Matt Judon is trying to recruit a true wide receiver one for the Pats offense, and if they can get one, they will be in a solid position for 2022. Also, let’s not sleep on Bill and Scheming.
12. Arizona Cardinals
Arizona resigned James Conner and Zach Ertz, which is excellent for their offense. Monitoring the Kyler Murray situation is something that may be going on for a while, but they have a solid roster; overall, let’s just see if they can build on last year again and end on a happier note.
13. Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens have such a solid roster, and the injuries last year are what hurt them. Having Marcus Peters and Marlon Humphrey back from their injuries will do wonders for this team and immediately make them a playoff contender. It was a down year for Baltimore in 2021, but they want that to change in 2022 after watching the Bengals make it to the Super Bowl.
14. Denver Broncos
I’m keeping the Broncos hereafter the Russell Wilson trade. Yes, I think this will be a good team and solid offense. However, whenever you bring in a new quarterback, you never know what will happen, and not every change of scenery is good. So, keeping them in the top 15, I think, is very fair.
15. Indianapolis Colts
The Colts still don’t have their quarterback situation figured out, but they still have a ton of capital to play with and some great free agents out there to make a move on. I trust the offensive line and running back more than anything and have always been high on the Colts, and I think that they can
16. Philadelphia Eagles
Eagles signed center Jason Kelce and were able to get Haason Reddick on a three-year deal. With three first-round draft choices, the Eagles have a lot of flexibility to help their defense and offense with a solid draft in 2022. Philly made it to the playoffs in year one under Hurts’ first season as a full-time starter and Nick Sirrianis first year as a head coach. They will be in a great position if they can get a wideout to compliment Devonta Smith.
17. Las Vegas Raiders
The Raiders made the playoffs last year and are hoping to repeat, but their division got that much harder with Russell Wilson now in town. In addition, they need a wideout after losing Zay Jones to the jaguars in Free Agency, but one thing Raider nation can be happy about is Maxx Crosby signing a four-year deal to stick around.
18. Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings resigned Kirk Cousins and locked him through 2023, which helps the cap. I believe in new head coach Kevin O’Connell and think we will have a great offensive unit. The defense is going to be the critical thing to fix. Releasing Michael Pierce saved cap space, and the signing of Harrison Phillips to a three-year deal was more team-friendly, which is a good move. But that secondary still needs a lot of help.
19. Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins went out and signed a running back in Chase Edmonds and were able to franchise tag Mike Gesicki. They are locking up critical positions for their offense on new head coach Mike Daniels. I wouldn’t be surprised if they made a move for one of the young talented wideouts in the draft; it would help bring out the best in Tua.
20. Cleveland Browns
Cleveland cut ties with Jarvis so he could sign with a new team and then gave up nothing to acquire Amari Cooper. Nick Chubb is still a top 5 running back in the NFL, and the offensive line is solid. However, reports show Cleveland is interested in Deshaun Watson, which puts their quarterback position into uncertainty. Even if Baker is the full-time starter, he has a lot to prove coming into 2022.
21. Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers resigned two players on defense (cornerback Arthur Maulet and Safety Miles Killebrew) and one on offense (tackle Chukwuma Okorafor). Then they went out and got quarterback Mitchell Trubisky on a two-year deal to replace Big Ben. Not the flashiest signing or one that many would want, but when Mitch Trubiksy had a top 7 defense, he could make the Pro-Bowl and bring Chicago to the playoffs. Maybe he can do it again? Let’s not forget the Steelers were just in the playoffs when it looked like they had no chance.
22. Washington Commanders
Washington final has their quarterback (Carson Wentz), and they didn’t overspend to get him. However, they did lose All-Pro guard Brandon Scherff to Jacksonville in Free Agency. They need to address the pass-catchers and offensive line in this year’s draft if they hope to find success and make it back to the playoffs.
23. New York Giants
The New York Giants are finally addressing something they need to: the offensive line. Going after Jon Feliciano and Mark Glowinski provides consistency both in health and production for a Giants offensive line that has been shuffled around the last few years. Hopefully, with an offensive-minded head coach and a new offensive line, they can help Daniel Jones grow to the franchise quarterback that the Maras thought he could be.
24. New York Jets
The Jets, much like the Giants, went out and got protection for their franchise quarterback by signing offensive guard Laken Tomlinson. Tomlinson is coming from the 49ers and is an excellent run-blocking guard. He will help open the running lanes and provide protection for Zach Wilson in year two. Expect a heavy defensive draft after spending money on the offense in Free Agency thus far.
25. Carolina Panthers
Carolina got Xavier Woods to help in the secondary and Super Bowl Champion offensive guard Austin Corbett. Corbett will immediately help in the run and passing game, and the offensive line was a massive hole in the Panthers’ offense in 2021. They need to address the quarterback situation (have meetings with Deshaun Watson,) but if they can’t find someone soon, they might be looking at another wasted season with such a talented roster.
26. Chicago Bears
Chicago seems to be in a complete rebuild after trading Khalil Mack, releasing Eddie Goldman, and allowing James Daniels to explore Free Agency. As a result, Chicago finds itself clearing up cap space and trying to build around Justin Fields in his second season under the new regime. Chicago may not be a playoff team just yet, but they will be looking to see the next steps taken by their young quarterback.
27. New Orleans Saints
The Saints let Marcus Williams leave in Free Agency; there is uncertainty about when/if Alvin Kamara will be back and eligible for the season. And currently, it doesn’t appear that they have a starting quarterback. So, Dennis Allen has his work cut out for him coming into this season to get the Saints back into playoff contention, all while still navigating their cap situation.
28. Jacksonville Jaguars
Jaguars have been ACTIVE during Free Agency. Signing Zay Jones, Christian Kirk (to a big deal, Evan Engram, Brandon Scherff, and defensive players like Foley Fatukasi and Foye Oluokun. They released Myles Jack, and it is evident that they are trying to help Trevor Lawrence in his second year. These Free Agent signings might not translate onto on the field improvement, especially when they still face both the Titans and Colts twice a year. But then again, they did make the AFC Championship in 2017, something no one saw coming.
29. Detroit Lions
Detroit has been resigning players (Tim Boyle, Josh Reynolds, Alex Anzalone) and haven’t made any splashy moves in Free Agency. Their most significant move was signing DJ Chark to a one-year deal. The Lions surprised last year with how they played, and it will surprise me if they do that again. However, it looks as though they are going to opt for the draft to find young talent to help improve this football team, and with two picks in the first round, they can do just that.
30. Seattle Seahawks
Seattle got everything back that they traded away to get Jamal Adams when they traded Russell Wilson to Denver, which is excellent. But they still have a weak defense. Watching what they did offensively without Russel Wilson, it’s tough to imagine them making any substantial improvement this season. Then you factor in that three of their division opponents were all in the playoffs (one of them one the Super Bowl); it isn’t looking good for Seattle now.
31. Atlanta Falcons
I could be very harsh on Atlanta, but no, Calvin Ridley for an entire season, and Russell Gage went to Tampa Bay in Free Agency. Kyle Pitts is their #1 wideout in only his second year coming from the tight end position; this offense is something you must worry about. Rumors have circulated that Matt Ryan might get shipped off, and they’re looking into Deshaun Watson. This is just not where they were hoping to be at this point in the offseason.
32. Houston Texans
This isn’t a surprise, I think. The Texans were not a good team in 2021 and don’t look to be in 2022. Brandin Cooks is a stud, but this offense has no one they can rely on outside of him. Letting Justin Reid walk away in Free Agency was insane to me. He was their best defensive player last year and is coming into his own as a solid starting safety in the NFL. I still don’t fully grasp the David Culley firing, though I love Lovie Smith. I hope he can turn this team around. I’ve said it once before, and I’ll repeat it, Houston is still feeling the effects of the Bill O’Brien era.
